20 Mar Great reviews of new CD Il tramonto
The ATMA all-Respighi recording Il Tramonto has been reviewed and has received some great critics on various international sites. Released on September 25, 2015, this CD features canadian soprano Isabel Bayrakdarian and the Orchestre symphonique de Laval under Alain Trudel. It is available today on iTunes.
Every so often a perfect listening trance can befall one. Here, certainly; this CD glows with beauty. I don’t think I have heard a lovelier program of small-scale Respighi. It would be hard to improve upon this.
Fanfare Magazine (USA), Jan/Feb 2016
Alain Trudel conducts with admirable restraint. The playing is clean and clear…Trudel’s no-nonsense way with Respighi speaks volumes in the first set of Ancient Airs and Dances…best of all, though, is Gli uccelli, where the playing is excellent, the instrumental solos particularly graceful and poised. Very enjoyable”
Gramophone (UK), Feb 2016
This first disc from l’Orchestre symphonique de Laval presents us with an ensemble in full possession of its means.
… offers a lot of irradiante warmth in its interpretation. The music of Respighi is staged so beautifully that one feels the large frescoes of wonderful images.
… We already want a second volume with OSL, which seems perfectly at ease with this endearing composer.
La Scena Musicale (Can), Oct 2105
As good as the performances of the orchestral pieces are, Il Tramonto sets the disc apart and I can’t imagine hearing a better performance. It really is a thrilling 15 minutes and deserves top billing.
…The playing is full of atmosphere and energy and the depth of tone in Il Tramonto belies the fact that this is a chamber orchestra. ATMA’s recording is absolutely top class. Lovely disc.
